Modesto Main Jail

The Modesto Main Jail is also known as Stanislaus County Men’s Jail. It is the central booking location for all male inmates and is one of the three main jail sites in the county. The average daily population of the Modesto Main Jail is 376. Approximately 1,489 arrests are taken to this jail on a monthly basis.

Knowing a friend or a loved one has been booked into the Modesto Jail can be a stressful time. Friends and family of the person in the jail may want to know how they can help, or how they can contact the inmate. Here is some important information to note for those who have a friend or loved one in the Modesto Jail.

Visiting an Inmate at the Modesto Jail

At the Modesto Jail, all inmates are encouraged to have contact with their family and friends as possible. Inmates are allowed a minimum of two visits per week, running Monday through Sunday. Visits are limited to 30 minutes each. Visiting hours at the Modesto Main Jail are 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. daily, although no visitations are allowed on Wednesdays. Visitors should note there is a dress code, including mandatory foot wear. Revealing clothing will not be permitted to be worn when visiting an inmate. Visitors will also be subjected to a security screening, which may include a physical search. Inmates are allowed to refuse visitors as they so choose. A commissary is located at the Modesto Jail in order for inmates to purchase personal and other approved items to enhance morale. An inmate may purchase up to $50 worth of goods at the commissary at one time. No returns or exchanges are allowed after the purchase. Inmates can only draw from their personal commissary account, and not the accounts of other inmates. In order to add to an inmate’s commissary funds, certified checks or money orders should be sent. No cash or personal checks will be accepted for such purposes.

Inmates at the Modesto Jail are permitted to send and receive unlimited amounts of mail. Letter writing material is provided by the jail. It is important to note that all mail is inspected for contraband. To send an inmate mail, use the following format:

Inmates at the Modesto Jail have access to telephones in order to have legal and personal communication. Calls are limited to a 15 minute timeframe and will be completed using collect calling methods. Telephones are located on all floors of the jail.

Medical and mental health problems are addressed at the Modesto Jail for those who need care and treatment of such conditions. Licensed medical personnel staff the jail 24 hours a day, seven days a week in order to provide for routine medical and emergency services. Pill calls are conducted as needed by medical staff in order to provide inmates with needed prescription and non-prescription medications.
