Manteca Jail is one of three correction facilities in San Joaquin County, which serves the city of Manteca both as a receiving and a holding facility. Manteca is a beautiful town located an hour east of San Francisco with a population of 71,000 that has been steadily growing ever since the town was established in 1849. Manteca Jail is a well-kept and well-disciplined correction facility in California. Overcrowded conditions have gotten worse in the past decade. The California Board of State and Community Corrections states that all county, state and federal correction facilities in California have reached or exceeded their capacity. The conditions have gotten so overwhelming that in 2013, 29,000 inmates went on a hunger strike. The state of California Corrections pleaded with the Governor for assistance. Porterville Jail (Tulare County Jail)

Porterville in California's San Joaquin Valley is a gateway to the huge recreational area of the Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks. The name of its county, Tulare, is what native Americans called the tall swamp rushes that stretch out into the valley floor. With a population of more than 55,000, Porterville has received $66 million to begin construction in 2016 on a new county jail to house the inmate population. The Tulare County Department of Corrections handles all types of criminal cases in the area. These include felonies, misdemeanors, and infractions. A felony is the most serious charge and includes murder, rape, and robbery. It is punishable by death or up to a life sentence in a state prison. A misdemeanor is the charge for such actions as speeding, drunk driving, or petty theft. Punishment is usually a fine, up to $1,000, and/or jail time, which is served in a county jail rather than a state prison. An infraction, such as running a red light, is not considered criminal and usually merits a fine.


Santa Rosa Jail (Sonoma Main Adult Detention Facility)

Deep in Sonoma County and fifty-five miles north of San Francisco, Santa Rosa, California, is home to those who love wine, redwood forests, and the wonderful Peanuts characters, for this was also the home of Charles M. Schultz, who created Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and all the gang. With a population of more than 170,000, Santa Rosa also has a large city jail, which is the main adult detention facility for Sonoma County. The California Department of Corrections handles criminal cases, which includes infractions, misdemeanors, and felonies. The least serious of these offenses is an infraction, such as being caught not wearing a seatbelt, which is not considered a criminal offense and generally gets only a fine. A misdemeanor may involve actions such as drunk driving or speeding that may merit a fine, not more than $1,000, and even some jail time, which is served in the county jail rather than state prison. The most serious offense is a felony, such as murder, rape, or robbery, which is punishable by up to a lifetime in prison or death.


Bakersfield Jail (Kern County Jail)

The city of Bakersfield, CA has a population of approximately 360,000, and is one of the fastest-growing cities in the U.S. It is located in the southern tip of Kern County, and because of its size, there are several locations and facilities in the Kern County Jail system. When someone is arrested, they are taken to Bakersfield Jail, Kern County Jail, which acts as the Central Receiving Facility for the county. Bakersfield Jail is run by the Kern Sheriff’s Department. There are 58 counties in California, with at least one county jail in each county. There are also state jails and Federal prisons in California, and the majority of the inmates, about 87 percent, are male.
